With first direct's online Travel Money service, you can arrange your foreign currency in less time than it takes to pack your bags. In fact, we'll deliver your currency straight to your door - so all you have to think about at the airport is your duty free.

  • order currency and Travellers Cheques online or over the telephone* from £100 up to £2,500. Charges may apply**
  • cash orders available in up to 67 currencies
  • Travellers Cheques available in up to seven currencies.

Before you order

Ordering Travel Money is quick and easy - but there are a few things you might want to bear in mind first.

  • your currency will be delivered Monday to Friday, excluding Public Holidays
  • the home address for delivery has to be the same as the billing address for your debit card or credit card. Orders have to be signed for so please make sure someone is in to do so
  • cut-off for next day delivery online is 2pm and for telephone orders it's 3pm, though delivery to certain remote parts of the UK may take up to three working days
  • Travel Money is provided in association with Travelex Currency Services Limited, and Travellers Cheques are supplied by American Express®. They are recognised worldwide and if lost can be replaced within 24 hours.

* Telephone orders are available for first direct customers only and are subject to a commission fee of 2%, minimum £3.00. This charge will be waived for First Directory members.

** Ordering currency is commission free if you order online. Telephone orders are subject to a commission fee of 2%, minimum £3.00. Telephone orders for Sterling Travellers Cheques are also subject to a 1.5% commission fee and this fee is waived for First Directory members. You may also be charged a cash advance fee and interest by your card issuer should you use a credit card. If you pay online using a Mastercard, Travelex will levy a handling fee of 1.5% of the order value (minimum £4, maximum £15).

Can I place an order for foreign currencies and Travellers Cheques in more than one currency at the same time?

Yes, you can order foreign currency and Travellers Cheques in a combination of different currencies in one order.

How much can I order online from first direct?

The minimum first direct Travel Money Online order value is £100 and the maximum order value is £2,500, excluding any delivery charge, commission, other associated fees or charges payable.

How do I know that my first direct Travel Money Online order has been successful?

At the end of the order process you will see a message confirming your first direct Travel Money Online order has been accepted together with an order reference number. We recommend you note down your order reference number or, if you can, print the confirmation message. You will need to quote this number in any subsequent correspondence.

What should I do if I experience difficulties whilst placing my first direct Travel Money Online order?

Should you experience any difficulties when placing your order you can phone on 0845 300 1606 quoting your order reference number if applicable (opening hours are 08.30 to 17.30 Monday to Friday. Closed Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays).

Can I cancel or amend my first direct Travel Money Online order?

Once we confirm your order and it has been paid for you cannot amend or cancel it. One of the reasons for this is that the price of Travel Money is dependent on changes in the financial market which are outside our control. We may at our sole discretion purchase the order back from you at the market rate and on the same terms as are offered for purchase of Travel Money to the public on the date in question. This means you may receive less than the purchase price of the original order.

 

How much will I be charged to buy foreign currency and Travellers Cheques through the first direct Travel Money Online service?

There are no card fees charged if you choose to pay using your first direct debit card. if you pay using your first direct credit card a cash advance fee will apply - see interest rates and charges. If you pay using other providers credit card a cash advance fee and interest may be applied by the card provider. If you wish to pay using a MasterCard credit card online, Travelex will levy a handling fee of 1.5% of the order value (min £4.00 - max £15.00), this will be shown within your order summary.

In addition, your card issuer may apply a cash advance charge, which will be shown separately on your card statement.

How much will I be charged to buy foreign currency and Travellers Cheques through the first direct telephone service?

Telephone orders are subject to a commission fee of 2% minimum £3.00. Only first direct customers can order currency over the telephone. This charge will be waived for First Directory members. You will also be charged a commission fee of 1.5% for ordering Sterling Travellers Cheques, this fee is also waived for First Directory members.

What are my payment options?

You can use most UK issued Visa or MasterCard credit or debit cards including Electron, Visa Delta and Maestro.

When will my payment card be debited?

When placing the order you will be requested to input your card details. Once authorisation has been obtained from your card issuer, the payment will usually be debited from your account immediately if you are using a debit card. The date the card is debited for credit cards will usually be the date you placed the order but may vary depending on your card issuer.

How will the transaction appear on my statement?

It will appear as "travel money".

Will I be charged to use my payment card?

You may be charged a cash advance fee by your card issuer. This will depend on the card issuer's terms and conditions and you should refer to them for details.

Where and how will my first direct Travel Money Online order be delivered?

Orders can only be delivered to the card billing address of a valid UK issued credit or debit card held by you.

When will my first direct Travel Money Online order be delivered?

Delivery times and dates are not guaranteed. However, we will aim to deliver your Travel Money as follows:

* Days quoted are based on working days. If your order falls over a UK public or Bank Holiday then an additional day(s) will be added.
** Working day means Monday to Friday excluding UK bank and Public Holidays.

Delivery to certain remote parts of the United Kingdom may take up to three working days.

For orders placed on a Friday, Saturday delivery may be possible but this cannot be guaranteed.

What happens if I want my first direct Travel Money Online order to be delivered to a different address from my card billing address?

Deliveries can only be made to the billing address of the card you choose to pay with.

Can I choose to select a delivery date in the future?

You may select a specific date for delivery which can be up to ten working days from when you placed your order. Working day means Monday to Friday excluding UK bank and Public Holidays.

What will happen if I am not at home when my first direct Travel Money Online order is delivered?

Because the order has to be signed for, Royal Mail should leave a card giving details of where the order can be collected. This will normally be your local post office or sorting office. You must take this card with you when you collect your order, along with any required ID.

About Travellers Cheques

Who can sign my Travellers Cheques?

Your Travellers Cheques should only be signed by the person placing the order as the purchase has been registered in their name.

Where do I sign my Travellers Cheques when I receive them?

When you receive the Travellers Cheques you must sign them immediately, in the upper left-hand corner. If you do not you will not be reimbursed if they are lost or stolen.

Where can I cash my Travellers Cheques?

The Travellers Cheques you will receive are welcomed around the world and accepted at a wide variety of banks and foreign exchange bureaux.

If travelling to the USA you may be able to use your Travellers Cheques in shops and restaurants as you would cash although identification is sometimes required.

What should I do if my American Express Travellers Cheques are lost or stolen?

You must report the loss immediately using the contact details supplied with your cheques. The American Express Travellers' Cheque Management unit is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Full contact details will be supplied with your purchase.
