Home Insurance Contents Cover

What's covered as standard Amount
Contents cover Up to £50,000

Contents cover includes damage caused by fire, smoke, explosion, lightning, earthquake, storm or flood. It also covers damage caused by riots, civil unrest, strikes, labour or political disturbances, and malicious people or vandals.

You’re covered if your property is hit by aircraft or other flying objects or items dropped from them; or vehicles or animals. Also, for water escaping from water tanks, pipes, equipment or fixed heating systems, as well as water freezing in tanks, equipment or pipes. Additionally, for heating fuel leaking from a fixed heating system.

You’re covered for theft or attempted theft, falling radio or television receiving aerials (including satellite dishes), their fittings and masts, subsidence or heave of the land on which the buildings stand, or landslip, and falling trees or branches.

We will not cover the excess(es) shown on your schedule, property insured by any other policy, items used for business purposes or any living creature.

Valuable contents Up to £6,000

Includes stamp, coin or medal collections, pictures, other works of art, items of gold, silver or any other precious metal, jewellery, watches and furs.

Contents temporarily removed from home Up to £5,000

We will provide cover up to the limit shown on your schedule for loss of or damage to contents by any of the causes listed under 'Contents within the home' while temporarily removed from the home to any bank or safe deposit, or any private home or building where you are living (including while attending full-time education), employed or working in the British Isles or anywhere else in the British Isles.

We will not cover:

  • more than the limit shown on your schedule for loss or damage to contents in garages and outbuildings
  • loss or damage by theft, unless someone has broken into, or out of a building using force and violence or deception to get in.
Contents in the Garden Up to £500

We will provide cover for loss of or damage to contents which are in the open within the boundaries of the home, if the loss or damage is caused by anything listed under Contents in the home section of the policy document.

We will not cover:

Loss or damage that happens after the home has been left unoccupied for more than 30 days or loss of or damage to pedal cycles.

Accidental damage to home entertainment equipment, mirrors and glass Up to sum insured

We will provide cover for accidental damage up to the limit shown on your schedule to television sets (including digital and satellite receivers), DVD/video players and recorders, games consoles, home computers and audio equipment in the home; and receiving aerials, dishes and CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras fixed to the home.

We will not cover:

  • games consoles, audio/visual equipment, laptops or computer equipment designed to be portable
  • digital/video cameras and satellite navigation systems
  • damage caused by wear and tear or anything which happens gradually
  • damage caused by the process of cleaning, washing, repairing or restoring any item
  • electrical or mechanical breakdown
  • damage caused by chewing, scratching, tearing or fouling by domestic animals.
Religious festivals and Wedding gift cover Up to £3,000

We will increase the sum insured for contents by the amounts shown on your schedule:

  • during any month in which you celebrate a religious festival, to cover gifts and food bought for the occasion
  • during the 30 days before and 30 days after your wedding day to cover wedding gifts.

 

What's covered as standard Amount
Buildings cover unlimited

Building cover includes damage caused by fire, smoke, explosion, lightning, earthquake, storm or flood. It also covers damage caused by riots, civil unrest, strikes, or labour or political disturbances, and malicious people or vandals.

You’re covered if your property is hit by aircraft or other flying objects or items dropped from them; or vehicles or animals. Also, for water escaping from water tanks, pipes, equipment or fixed heating systems, as well as water freezing in tanks, equipment or pipes. Additionally, for heating fuel leaking from a fixed heating system.

You’re covered for theft or attempted theft, falling radio or television receiving aerials (including satellite dishes), their fittings and masts, subsidence or heave of the land on which the buildings stand, or landslip, and falling trees or branches. If we accept a claim for damage to buildings by falling trees we will also pay reasonable costs you have to pay for removing from the site the fallen part of the tree; or the tree itself if it has been totally or partly uprooted.

We will not cover:

  • the excess(es) shown on your schedule
  • damage that happens after the home has been left unoccupied for more than the period shown on your schedule.
Accidental damage to services, fixed glass and sanitary fittings Up to sum insured

We will provide cover for accidental damage to cables and underground pipes which provide services to or from the buildings; and septic tanks and drain inspection covers that you are legally responsible for.

We will not cover damage due to a fault or limit of design, manufacture, construction or installation or loss or damage that happens after the home has been left unoccupied for more than the period shown on your schedule.

Home Emergency Cover

first direct Home Emergency Cover provides you with expert help with emergencies at your property.

What are the benefits?

  • up to £1,000 for labour, parts and materials per incident
  • hotel accommodation costs up to £1,000 if your home is uninhabitable. This is in addition to the labour, parts and materials claims limit of £1,000
  • no excess to pay
  • £500 boiler contribution for boilers declared beyond economical repair.

What's covered?

  • loss of essential services i.e. boiler breakdowns
  • roof damage following a storm
  • plumbing emergencies
  • electrical emergency and breakdown
  • lost keys or damage to locks, doors and windows
  • pest infestation of rats, mice, wasps or hornets.

Home Emergency Cover isn't a service and maintenance product and doesn't cover repairs which are due to wear and tear ( e.g. dripping taps).

It doesn't cover breakdown of electric showers or domestic appliances like washing machines and doesn't cover emergencies you were already aware of when you bought cover.

Legal expenses

Legal service cover provides you with a lawyer, if you need one, and up to £50,000 of legal costs to pursue or defend a wide range of disputes including:

  • personal injury
  • employment
  • property
  • medical negligence
  • consumer issues.
Extended Accidental Damage - Buildings

Extra cover includes:

  • putting your foot through the ceiling
  • hammering a nail through a pipe
  • damaging wood or tiled flooring.

We will not cover:

  • the excess(es)shown on your schedule
  • damage caused by wear and tear, settlement and shrinkage, vermin, insects, fungus, weather conditions, or any damage which happens gradually
  • damage caused by chewing, scratching, tearing or fouling by domestic animals
  • damage caused by faulty materials or design, or poor workmanship
  • damage caused by subsidence, heave or landslip.
Extended Accidental Damage - Contents

You also have the option to purchase additional accidental damage cover for your contents, which includes:

  • knocking over a favourite ornament and damaging it
  • sitting on your glasses at home
  • spilling a drink on your carpet
  • damage to portable computers when in the home.

We will not cover:

  • the excess shown on your schedule
  • food in freezers, clothing, contact lenses, stamps and pedal cycles
  • damage caused by wear and tear, light, weather conditions, moth, vermin, insects, fungus, damp, rust, wet or dry rot, or anything which happens gradually
  • damage caused by chewing, scratching, tearing or fouling by domestic animals.
Personal belongings

Protect your personal belongings, wherever you are in the world.

We will not cover:

  • the excess(es) shown on your schedule
  • theft from an unattended vehicle
  • loss or damage caused by wear and tear, light, weather conditions, moth, vermin, insects, fungus, damp, rust, wet or dry rot, or anything which happens gradually
  • loss or damage to sports racquets, sticks, bats and clubs while in use.
Pedal cycles

Minimum £300 and up to £2,500 towards loss or damage.

We will not cover:

  • loss or damage to tyres or accessories unless the pedal cycle is stolen or damaged at the same time
  • theft while away from the home, unless in a building or securely locked to an object that cannot be moved.
Clerical business equipment

Up to £5,000 if you work from home.

We will not cover:

  • motorised vehicles, aircraft, boats, sailboards, surfboards, jet skis, caravans, trailers, pedal cycles and parts and accessories of any of these.

Clerical business stock or trade samples does not include:

  • motorised vehicles, wines, spirits or tobacco, furs, antiques or works of art, jewellery, precious metals or stones, or any articles made from them, chemicals or any hazardous materials.
15% Discount Offer

This offer is open to new first direct Home Insurance customers, who obtain a quotation for buildings and/or contents cover. This offer does not apply to existing customers whose first direct Home Insurance policies are due for renewal during the offer period.

The offer applies to quotations with a minimum premium of £70.00 for buildings, £60.00 for contents and £130.00 for a combined buildings and contents policy (after the application of the 15% discount). The premium quoted will be inclusive of the 15% discount.
