It's fairly simple - you need a PC, a Mac, a smartphone or tablet with internet access and the right browser software. Some of this may sound technical but most new computers will have all this on board.

  • PC browser: Microsoft® Internet Explorer (version 7 or higher)*, Mozilla Firefox (version 3 or higher)** or Google Chrome (version 6 or higher)***

Security

As a bank, we naturally take security very seriously - so you can be assured that your money is in safe hands, however you choose to access it.

We use a combination of hardware and software encryption devices to protect your accounts and personal details, and we guarantee if any money is taken from your account through a computer crime, we will repay it in full, providing you have complied with our Terms and Conditions.

Naturally, we expect you to do a few things to protect your account, so never disclose your password (for example don't write it down or email it to anyone, or let anyone else see what you're typing in when you log on). And always log off when you've finished your transactions.

Trusteer Rapport

To help protect your Internet Banking, we strongly recommend you download the free Trusteer Rapport online security software which works alongside your existing antivirus software.

Trusteer Rapport security software safeguards your Internet Banking log on details by:

  • securing the connection between your computer and first direct Internet Banking
  • checking that you've accessed a genuine first direct website. If you haven't accessed one of our websites, it stops your data going to a fraudulent website
  • Trusteer Rapport can be downloaded onto nearly all PCs and Macs.

You can find out more about Trusteer Rapport here.

If you're an existing first direct customer and not yet registered for our online banking service, just call us on 08 456 100 100 for your online IDs and to find out how you can register for the service.

Get your statements online

Banking online means there's much less need for paper statements - making your financial details all the more secure.

You can view up to six years of statements online within Internet Banking and request up to six years of past paper statements - absolutely free of charge. You can also let us know if you wish to receive notifications of account changes and updates of Terms and Conditions, interest rates, charges and fees online in future too.

To amend your statement preferences, simply log on to Internet Banking and select 'manage statements' from the left hand menu.
